How Real Women Get That Glow

Posted at Jul 27, 2016 10:43 am

If you’ve been reading these tips for a while, you know that I love to draw parallels between my fictional heroines and the real world. Well, folks, I’ve got to admit, this post is all real-world.

Most of my fictional heroines—spy, princess or girl next door—are blessed with great skin. It’s not that they don’t have beauty routines, but those bits rarely make it to the page in a story. They don’t need these tips. But for those of you in the real world, read on.

Our genetics are a lottery. Some of us hit it lucky and others—not so much. But every woman can take steps to caring for what Mom & Dad—or Mother Nature—gave her. I’m not a dermatologist (and I don’t play one on TV) but I’ve picked up some good advice throughout my life.

Here are my three tips to healthier, clearer, glowing skin.

  1. waterUse sunscreen. The higher the SPF (sun protection factor) the better. Even for those of you who tan in no time flat. Better yet, stay out of the sun as much as possible. No, you don’t have to be a hermit, but nothing ages you faster than baking your unprotected skin. Plus you minimize your risk of skin cancer.
  1. hydrateMoisturize Daily. When it comes to moisture for the skin, everyone has a favorite, so pick one that works with your skin. I especially like the “Midnight Recovery Oil” from Kiehl’s ( (What are YOUR favorites?)
  1. Drink plenty of fluids—especially water. Think of this as “moisturizing from within.” A well hydrated body leads to well hydrated skin. Hydration minimizes wrinkles and maximizes “glow.” Caffeinated drinks like black tea, coffee and soda dehydrate the body. Same goes for alcohol. You don’t have to skip coffee or champagne—just counterbalance your indulgence with an extra glass or two of water.

As for the fictional heroines? Their glow just might come from love, excitement, adventure or any of a dozen things. I’ll leave making that list up to you.
